Great care has to be taken in heating anything in a microwave oven, especially the gel packs, wheat bags and similar products to each muscle and back pain. There have been numerous cases of burn injuries due to overheated gels, etc. They tend to heat in the center but the surface seems to be only warm. Tests in my laboratory on these products have shown temperatures far above 140 F which can cause 3rd degree burns in 5 seconds, and as little as one second at 160 F.
