There are many causes of back pain and the reason for your particular aches is probably as unique and individual as the pain itself. But sometimes there are common causes that are to blame and that almost always cause pain in the back regions. These reasons include poor posture, an incorrect setup when it comes to your desk and chair at work, an injury or accident, arthritis, and the most unpleasant of all … excess body weight.
People today are often very sensitive about their body weight and often feel that it’s their own personal business if they’re carrying a few extra pounds. This is very true, a person’s weight is their own business, but the connection between excessive body weight and back pain cannot be denied either.
The body is meant to carry around and move only so much weight. When a person has pounds on them in excess of this, they’re asking their body to work overtime and to also work twice or three times as hard as it should be working. What is also dangerous is that carrying around excess body weight is something that the muscles and joints never get a break from! A weightlifter that curls twenty pounds or bench presses some weight will eventually put those down and give their muscles a break, but someone that is carrying around an extra ten, twenty, or fifty pounds never gives their body a break.
The back is one of the places hardest hit by excess body weight. Any movement we make, whether it’s from the arms, legs or midsection will involve the back. The muscles of the back are somehow connected to virtually every other muscle group in the body and help to support the body’s weight as well.
When you have excess body weight the back is working feverishly to move and support this weight every minute of the day, even when you’re asleep. Those muscles need to move around not just the standard amount of weight but these additional twenty or fifty pounds, so it’s no wonder that the back gets worn out that much quicker.
Body weight is a personal issue; we’re not trying to argue that point. But there is a connection between being overweight and back pain. There are many reasons one has to be mindful of their weight, and the health and strength of their back seems to be just one more they can add to that list!
